# Altair

**Altair** is a physical server residing in the CSL Machine Room. It used to serve [KVM Virtual machines](/technologies/virtualization-stack.md) but is currently used as a logging/SIEM server.

## History

Altair was one of the six X4150s allocated to run Sun Ray (thin client) services for the Sun Rays around the school. Altair was recieved through the 2008 Sun AEG recieved by the TJ CSL. From 2016 to February 2018, it acted at the backup [ns1](/technologies/networking/dns.md), in case the VM went down.
